Sometimes, she’d do a 100, with variations,” says Payal Gidwani, the celebrity yoga instructor, who’s often credited with giving most Bollywood actresses a svelte figure. Not just Kareena, Payal even boasts of extracting more than 50 Surya Namaskars from Rani Mukerji at one go, as part of her slimming and fitness regime. Though our celebs swear by power yoga when it comes to losing weight and getting that envious frame, one asana that particularly hogs the limelight is the Surya Namaskar. Be it Kareena Kapoor from Bollywood, or Barkha Bisht from Tellyland, each one religiously follows the Surya Namaskar. “Surya Namaskar is a series of twelve physical postures. These alternating backward and forward bending postures flex and stretch the spinal area at its maximum range, and thus give a stretch to the whole body. Surya Namaskar has a deep effect in detoxifying the organs through constant oxygenation, and has a deeper relaxing effect,” says Surakshit Goswami, yoga instructor. “The asana gives you overall flexibility, while making you fit and active. It also helps improve your immune and digestive system,” he adds. The postures range from stretching and bending to flexing your muscles, while constantly breathing-in and breathing-out at regular intervals. The stretching and bending offers a complete body workout, whereas the copious inhaling and exhaling helps remove toxins from the body. Payal therefore calls Surya Namaskar “the base of power yoga.” “Power yoga is basically for those who want to achieve more in less time. Since our lives have become so fast, yoga gives brings a sense of mental calm,” she says. Any form of yoga, when practiced, works on five different aspects such as flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, strength, body composition and weight, and Surya Namaskar works on all the five aspects. “The best thing about Surya Namaskar is that anyone can do it, as the postures can be improvised, depending upon body type,” she says. Yoga experts, however, give a word of caution. “When it comes to performing asanas, it is very important that you do them under an able yoga instructor,” says Surakshit Goswami. “Since Surya Namaskar involves 12 postures, it is important to perfect them. If the postures are not right, it can result in giving you aches for the rest of your life,” he warns. Many people, who try to do Surya Namaskar just by watching TV or reading books, complain of backaches, neck pain or a leg sprain. Manish Tiwari, who teaches yoga to celebs like Katrina Kaif and Sridevi, shares a similar view. “It is absolutely necessary to practice yoga under an able instructor, as your they would know your complete body capacity and how much you can endure,” he says. But when it comes to how many, when someone like Kareena says that she can do 100-150 Surya Namaskars per session, Manish has an explanation. “For someone like Sridevi, who’s been practicing yoga for the past five years, doing 100 Surya Namaskars in one session is okay, as she has worked on her stamina and body endurance.” Payal Gidwani, who’s clientele includes Saif, Kareena, Farah Khan, Rani Mukerji and Vaibhavi Merchant, also advises against overdoing asanas. “When I’m making someone do 50 Surya Namaskars, I keep in mind their stamina, heart rate and strength. People need to know what their body capacity is, before getting into the numbers game. It is fine to do five Surya Namaskars a day, but doing that in a proper way is what will give you good results,” she says. 0 Reply Share Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedIn Share on WhatsApp Leave an answerCancel replyYou must login or register to add a new answer.
